Laundry 2019 Holiday Animation
For the 2019, we wanted to create a fun, out of the ordinary animation to how celebrate the holiday spirit for all the artists, clients & collaborators. To us, it needed to be every bit us. Colorful, weird, crazy, and fun.
Initial Design Exploration
Some of our initial designs started in a much more geometric world on one hand, and a bit of a cartoon like vibe in another approach. Both were wonderful, but not quite the right surprising vibe just yet.
The Turning Point.
Then, one of the illustrators made this. It really resonated. It had the right amount of unexpected feeling while keeping the holiday spirit. Visually, it also got us really excited about how fluid it looked. It inspired us to think of this piece with a cel animated approach which got the whole team really excited as it's one of our favorite types of animation styles.
Sketches.
This lead to a change of approach to our character designs, and we dove right into some new sketches to help get us inspired.
Character design & concept art.
Once we were all loving the sketches, we went right into character design and concept art. This was where the weirdness and whackiness we had hoped for all along that felt every bit laundry really started to come out and got the whole team excited.
First pass of animation.
Like anything, the best way to start is in sketch form. This allowed us to get the basic story points, then for us, which was the most exciting part, the transitions in between them.
Polish & Finesse.
From there, we started to dig into individual shots to add both color, and finesse. This is how we approached each scene to get just the right amount of boldness and unexpected weirdness that still felt holiday spirited we were after.
